Portrait – IF Robots

Last year two old friends of mine, Matt and Jesse, went into business together after completing their PhDs at the MIT Media Lab.  As you might have guessed from the post title their work focuses on various aspects of robotics (I’m fortunate to have very smart friends).  IF Robots’ (soon-to-be-renovated) website can be found here.

They needed portraits for an upcoming magazine article featuring their company so we spent an entertaining evening at their office working through a few different setups.  I’m generally a spontaneous/intuitive photographer so it was fun to slow down and spend time shaping the lighting and composition to suit the subjects(s).

A few additional images from the shoot can be found after the jump, including a rough but amusing light-painted image.

Engagement – Melissa&Dan

Finally I have some time to catch up on blog posts!

First up is an engagement shoot with Melissa and Dan, whose wedding I was also fortunate to photograph a few weeks ago.  Dan was a close colleague of mine when I was in the corporate world so it was great to spend some time with him and get to know Melissa better.

Melissa and Dan decided to do their engagement session in Providence, RI, where they met while attending college.   Providence is a great place for photography because it offers a wide variety of interesting environments in a relatively small area.  We also lucked out with the weather and had great light to work with.  As usual, more of my favorite images from the shoot can be found after the jump.

Maine 2011

I’m currently on the beautiful Maine coast relaxing with friends after a couple of really busy months.  The weather, while not always ideal for being outside, has been great for photography, and during a boat trip the other day we were treated to some truly spectacular fog and sunset colors as well as a wide array of wildlife (and a pontoon plane!).  I’ll be making more blog posts about all the fun work I’ve been doing lately soon, but for now there are a few more of my favorite images from this trip after the jump.

Wedding – Daria&Jonathan

I had a blast shooting Daria and Jonathan’s wedding and feel honored to have been able to share the day with them.

The ceremony was in a beautiful church just down the street in Somerville, and the reception was on the campus of their aforemetioned well-reputed educational institution.  While there was a bit of rain it held off for most of the day and the cloud cover made for great light and moderate temperatures.

D&J themselves looked so fabulous that they (OK, it was probably mostly Daria) nearly caused a car accident while we were walking along Memorial Drive during the portrait session.  It was also apparent that their families and guests had a great time and were totally excited about the wedding, which always makes for good photos and a happy photographer.

Congrats to Daria and Jonathan!  (More photos after the jump…)

Scituate 2011

I’m a bit behind on blog posts because I’ve been so busy but I’m slowly catching up and hope to have a post about Daria and Jonathan’s wedding up by the end of the week.  For today I decided upon something a bit less significant…

Every year a bunch of my favorite people gather in Scituate over the fourth of July weekend to catch up, play board games, cook, and generally decompress (OK, so there may be a few cocktails involved as well).  Although I thoroughly enjoyed spending most of my time on the aforementioned activities I did manage some decent images of the coast and sky, a few more of which can be found after the jump.  More to come soon!

Engagement – Daria and Jonathan

Daria and Jonathan are both grad students at a certain well-regarded academic institution. They met (and live) on a beautiful historic campus where I was fortunate to do their engagement shoot.

D&J have been great to work with – low-key, super organized, and enthusiastic.  I always scout shooting spots well in advance but this time my clients were one step ahead of me, providing an extensive list of neat locations for the session.  It was particularly awesome shooting in the historic bell tower atop their building.  Now I’m even more excited about photographing their wedding next weekend!  More of my favorite images after the jump.

Let’s Play Go

Whew…it has been a busy couple of weeks.  Lots of exciting things happening so I’m a couple of posts behind.  First in my queue is another Go event (see my previous post for a bit of info on the game).

This time around I was hired by a representative of the American Ing Go Educational Center (Ing is a major international patron of Go) and China Qiyuan to document the event, which included dinner, a visit from two senior officials from the Shanghai Ing Go Foundation and China Qiyuan, and a bunch of simultaneous games against high-ranking players.  Simultaneous games (or “simuls” for short) are pretty amazing to watch – one strong player plays multiple games in tandem against several weaker players.

At any rate, I had a great time shooting the event and was privileged to observe a lot of fantastic Go.  Some of my other favorite images follow the jump.

Boston Walk for Hunger 2011

On May 1st I volunteered at the Boston Walk for Hunger.  The sheer scope and number of people involved were pretty awe-inspiring.   The folks in charge were super-organized which made my job much easier…they even supplied a comprehensive shot list which I did my best to follow.

The weather was perfect for the walk, though less than ideal for photography…still, it was great fun (and good exercise) to shoot all the happy walkers, and I think I came away with some good images…more after the jump.

Great Scott

A few weeks ago Luke Kirkland (whose wedding I shot last year) invited me to a show his band Marconi was playing at Great Scott in Allston alongside a few other bands (Taiwan Typhoon, Amoroso, and Battle House). I decided to bring my cameras along and came away with some nice images (more after the jump).

I should also mention that Luke just released his first album as a rap artist called Initials B.R. and it is excellent…the first rap album I’ve liked in years, in fact. Check it out!

Boston MS Walk 2011

A bit over a week ago I volunteered as a photographer at the annual Boston MS Walk. It was great fun…it’s always nice to have an excuse to shoot outdoors on a beautiful spring day, especially when it’s for a good cause.

Photographic conditions were tricky (sunny days and gymnasium lighting are hard to work with), but hopefully I managed some images the organization will be able to use.  I look forward to covering the event again next year.  A few of my favorite images can be found after the jump.
